River Cruising vs Ocean Cruising

River cruising is not ocean cruising with a smaller boat. The differences run deeper than ship size.

Ocean cruising puts you in floating cities. Think 4,000 passengers, Broadway shows, and rock climbing walls. You wake up in Nassau. You go to sleep heading toward Cozumel. The ship is the destination.

River cruising flips this completely. Your Viking or AmaWaterways ship holds 190 people maximum. You dock in the heart of Cologne or Budapest. You walk off the ship directly into medieval squares and local markets. The destinations are the point.

Ocean cruises excel at variety and entertainment. One night you are watching Mamma Mia in the theater. The next you are eating at the hibachi restaurant. Your kids are happy at the kids club. Your parents are happy at the casino. Everyone wins.

River cruises excel at culture and convenience. You unpack once but visit six countries. Local experts guide you through Prague Castle and Vienna’s coffee houses. No tender boats. No fighting for shore excursion spots. You simply walk into town.

The price difference tells the story. A decent ocean cruise balcony runs $200 per person per night. A river cruise starts around $400 per person per night and climbs quickly. River cruising includes shore excursions and often drinks. Ocean cruising nickels and dimes you for everything.

If you want shows, pools, and multiple dining options, stick with the ocean. If you want to wake up looking at castles and fall asleep listening to church bells, rivers deliver that experience. If you want help sorting this out, that is literally what we do.
