Virgin Voyages Actually Delivers on Being Different

Most cruise lines claim to be revolutionary. Virgin Voyages might actually be onto something. They launched in 2021 with a simple premise: what if we built cruises for adults who think cruises are terrible?

No kids under 18. Ever. The dining is genuinely good instead of buffet acceptable. The shows skip Broadway knockoffs for actual entertainment. Their app works better than most cruise lines manage after decades of trying.

The ships feel more like boutique hotels than floating cities. Think 2,700 passengers instead of 6,000. The crew seems to enjoy their jobs. The tattoo parlor and record shop suggest someone understood the assignment.

Virgin works best for couples in their 30s and 40s who want to cruise without explaining why cruising is not inherently embarrassing. First time cruisers who assume all ships involve conga lines and chicken dance competitions. People who care more about quality food than unlimited quantity.

The downsides are real though. Limited itineraries mostly stick to Caribbean basics. The adults only policy cuts both ways if you have kids or enjoy family chaos. Prices run higher than mainstream lines. The hipster energy can feel forced when you just want a deck chair and a book.

Their newest ship Brilliant Lady starts sailing from New York in September 2025. Virgin finally gets an East Coast home port after years of making everyone fly to Miami or San Juan.

If you want to cruise but hate everything cruising represents culturally, Virgin Voyages gets it. If you love traditional cruising exactly as it is, probably skip this one.
