Virgin Voyages Actually Did Something Different

Most cruise lines claim they’re revolutionizing cruising. Virgin Voyages actually meant it.

Their adults-only ships ditched the buffet for 20+ restaurants. No kids means no screaming at 6 AM by the pool. Their crew gets tipped through an automatic service charge system instead of the awkward cash-in-envelope dance.

The Scarlet Lady and her sister ships feel more like floating boutique hotels than traditional cruise ships. Think tattoo parlors, drag brunch, and cocktails that don’t taste like they came from a gun. The cabins are genuinely well-designed with actual storage space.

This works perfectly if you want a party cruise without the frat house energy. Virgin attracts couples in their 30s and 40s who have money to spend on decent food and drinks. The vibe is sophisticated but not stuffy.

The downside is obvious. No kids means no families. The restaurant system can create long waits during peak times. Gratuities are built into your fare whether you want them or not. Some people miss the chaos and variety of traditional cruise ships.

Virgin costs more than mainstream lines but less than luxury. You get what you pay for. If you want to cruise without dealing with someone else’s children while eating food that doesn’t come from a heat lamp, Virgin makes sense. If you need three pools, a water slide, and activities for teenagers, book literally any other cruise line.
