River Cruising vs Ocean Cruising

River cruising and ocean cruising are about as similar as a pickup truck and a sports car. Both get you places, but the experience is completely different.

Ocean cruises pack thousands of people onto floating cities. You get Broadway shows, water slides, and specialty restaurants. The ship itself is the destination. Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas holds 7,000 passengers and has its own Central Park complete with living trees.

River cruises max out around 200 passengers on ships that glide through European villages or along the Nile. No rock climbing walls here. Instead you wake up in a new city every morning and walk off the ship directly into town squares that have existed for centuries. Viking River Cruises docks right in downtown Budapest, not some industrial port an hour away.

Ocean cruising costs less upfront but nickel and dimes you with drink packages, specialty dining, and shore excursions. River cruising costs more initially but includes nearly everything. Your wine with dinner, guided walking tours, and even Wi-Fi are covered.

Ocean cruises work for families, groups, and anyone who wants entertainment options. River cruises attract couples and solo travelers who prefer smaller groups and cultural immersion over poolside bingo. The average river cruise passenger is over 55 and prefers wine tastings to zip lines.

Choose ocean cruising if you want variety, entertainment, and value. Choose river cruising if you want intimacy, culture, and convenience. Both are cruising, but they solve completely different vacation problems.
