Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas Is Exactly What You Think It Is

Icon of the Seas launched in January 2024 as the world’s largest cruise ship. It holds 7,600 passengers when full. That’s roughly the population of a small Ohio town floating around the Caribbean.

The ship has everything you’ve heard about. Eight neighborhoods. The largest waterpark at sea. An ice skating rink. Multiple pools including one with a 55-foot waterfall. Twenty-eight restaurants and bars. Six waterslides including one that drops through the floor.

This is maximum cruise ship. If you want subtle or intimate, book literally any other ship. Icon exists for families who want their vacation to feel like a theme park that happens to float. The kids will never be bored. Neither will you, assuming you enjoy controlled chaos.

The downsides are obvious. Crowds everywhere. Dining reservations book fast. Pool chairs disappear by sunrise. The main pool area feels like a water park in July. You will wait in lines for popular attractions.

Icon works best for large families, multi-generational groups, and first-time cruisers who want the full spectacle. It’s perfect if you have teenagers who think regular cruises are boring. The ship offers seven-night Caribbean itineraries from Miami year-round.

You can absolutely experience this ship on your own. You can also navigate Times Square on New Year’s Eve alone. Some things are better with professional guidance and realistic expectations.
