The Real Cost of a Cruise

That $89 per person cruise fare is about as real as a unicorn wearing a tuxedo. Your actual cruise will cost significantly more.

Start with gratuities. Most cruise lines automatically charge $14 to $16 per person per day. That adds $196 to $224 for a week-long cruise for two people. You can adjust this amount, but the crew works hard and depends on these tips.

Specialty dining runs $35 to $75 per person per meal. Even one fancy dinner for two costs more than many people budget for their entire food experience. Internet packages range from $15 to $30 per day per device. Shore excursions average $75 to $150 per person per port.

Drinks add up fast. Beverage packages cost $55 to $80 per person per day. A single cocktail without a package runs $12 to $15. Even bottled water costs $3 to $4 each.

Here’s the math that matters. Take your cruise fare and multiply by 1.5 to 2. That gives you a realistic total budget. A $1,000 cruise for two people actually costs $1,500 to $2,000 when you include everything you’ll actually want.

You can spend less by skipping specialty restaurants, bringing your own water bottles, and choosing free activities over paid excursions. But most people don’t want to feel restricted on vacation. Budget accordingly and you’ll enjoy yourself more.
