Every cruise ship has a main dining room. Most passengers think they know exactly what that means. Order from the printed menu, eat your food, leave.
Here’s what they don’t tell you in the brochure. Almost every main dining room has items that aren’t on the printed menu. Your server can get you a simple grilled chicken breast even if the only chicken option tonight is some elaborate curry creation. They can make you a plain Caesar salad when the menu only shows arugula with pomegranate seeds.
This isn’t some industry secret. It’s basic hospitality that most guests never ask about. The galley stocks basics precisely because they know not everyone wants the chef’s nightly adventure in molecular gastronomy. You just have to ask your server.
The catch is timing and politeness. Don’t wait until the dining room is slammed at peak dinner hour to request your off-menu grilled salmon. Ask early in the meal service when the kitchen can actually accommodate special requests. Treat your server like a human being instead of a food delivery robot.
This works especially well for kids who refuse to eat anything that isn’t plain pasta or chicken fingers. Instead of watching your eight-year-old pick at herb-crusted halibut for an hour, just ask for buttered noodles. The kitchen has them. They make them every single day for other requests just like yours.
