The Case for Iceland Before Everyone Else Gets There

Most people put Iceland on a bucket list and leave it there. That is a mistake. Summer sailings along the Icelandic coast are some of the most quietly spectacular itineraries in cruising, and the window to do it right is shorter than most people realize.

Iceland sits at the intersection of the North Atlantic and Arctic Circle, which sounds miserable until you see what that actually means in practice. In June and July, you get nearly 24 hours of daylight. The landscape shifts from volcanic black sand beaches to glacier fields to geothermal pools within the span of a short drive. Most cruise itineraries stop in Reykjavik and call it done. The better ones also include Akureyri in the north or the Westfjords, which see a fraction of the tourist traffic and most of the dramatic scenery.

Here is something most travelers do not know going in. Reykjavik is compact and walkable, but the real reason to get off the ship early is the Golden Circle. Geysir, Gullfoss, and Thingvellir National Park can all be done in a single long day excursion. The thing is, cruise lines often offer this as a premium shore excursion at a premium price. A local guide booked independently will typically cover the same ground for less and with smaller groups.

The other thing worth knowing is that whale watching in Husavik, on the north coast, is genuinely better than almost anywhere else in the world. Humpbacks feed in those waters all summer. It is not a gimmick. If your itinerary touches anywhere near the north coast and you skip this, you will regret it in the way that is hard to explain to people who stayed on the ship.

September sailings exist and are cheaper. They are also colder, the days are shorter, and the crowds are gone. If you are willing to pack a real jacket, the tradeoff is worth considering. If you want help figuring out which itinerary actually gets you to the good parts, that is exactly what we do here.
