Somewhere on your ship, a person who has climbed Everest is talking to a half empty room. Down the hall, the trivia game is packed. This happens on almost every sailing.
Most cruise lines run an enrichment program. It is guest speakers, lectures, and talks, and it is included in your fare. You are already paying for it whether you show up or not.
Cunard has built a whole identity around this. Their Cunard Insights program brings on historians, explorers, diplomats, scientists, and other notable experts to give talks and lead discussions. In 2024 they scheduled more than 430 speakers across the fleet, up from 322 the year before. That is not a side attraction. That is the point of the ship.
The lineups get genuinely interesting. Cunard has partnered with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society for its Alaska season, bringing aboard explorers, naturalists, and even former astronauts to talk about the region you are actually sailing through. You listen to someone explain a glacier, then you walk out on deck and look at one. That combination is hard to beat.
Other lines do their own version. Holland America runs EXC Talks about the history and stories of the ports on your itinerary, plus local performers and experts who come aboard to teach you about the culture. Oceania leans into wellness and lifestyle talks. The names change from ship to ship, but the idea holds. Someone who knows a lot about something is standing in a nice room, and the door is open.
Here is the part people miss. Seats usually cannot be reserved, and the schedule shows up in your daily program, the one that lands in your cabin each night. Read it. Circle a talk. The best speakers fill up, and the good rooms fill up fast, so wandering in two minutes before start time is how you end up standing in the back.
You do not have to become a lecture person. You can also skip every one of them and sit by the pool. But a free hour with an Everest climber is a strange thing to walk past on your way to bingo.
If you want a ship where the enrichment program is actually worth planning your day around, that is exactly the kind of thing we help match you to. Just ask.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
