Cruise Ships Do Not Make You Sick and the Numbers Are Not Close

Everyone has an aunt who knows someone who got a stomach bug on a cruise. That story travels further than the ship ever did. The truth is boring, which is exactly why it never gets repeated.

Norovirus on a cruise is rare. It is so rare that the numbers almost feel like a typo. Cruise ship outbreaks account for only about one percent of all reported norovirus cases, whether on land or at sea. Read that again. The ocean is not the problem.

You are far more likely to catch it at home, at work, or at your kid’s school. One analysis put the odds of a norovirus outbreak affecting you on a cruise at roughly one in 5,500, compared to about one in 15 on land. That daycare is a petri dish. Your cabin is not.

So why does cruising get the bad reputation. Because the rules are strict. The CDC requires cruise lines to report outbreaks the moment they cross a low threshold, which means a handful of sick passengers becomes a news headline. A restaurant on land can make forty people sick and nobody files a public report. A ship reports at the first sign of trouble, and that honesty gets punished in the press.

Ships are also cleaned in a way your favorite hotel is not. Crew members sanitize handrails, buffet tongs, and elevator buttons on a schedule that would exhaust most people. When something does spread, it is usually because it walked aboard in someone’s luggage, not because the ship failed. The single best thing you can do is wash your hands with actual soap and water. Hand sanitizer alone does not kill this particular bug.

None of this means you should be reckless. It means you should stop letting a one percent statistic run your vacation planning. The fear is doing more damage than the virus ever will. You can worry about norovirus on a ship the same way you can worry about lightning on a golf course. It happens. It is not the reason to stay home.

If you want a straight answer about health, safety, or which ships handle this well, that is literally what we do. No scary aunt required.

Fair winds and following seas,
