The Piano Bar Is the Room That Fills Up After Everyone Else Goes to Bed

There is a room on your ship that is empty at nine and packed by eleven. It has a piano in the middle and stools all around it. Most people walk past it every night and never once sit down.

That is a mistake. The piano bar is the closest thing a cruise ship has to a neighborhood bar, and it costs nothing to walk in.

Here is how it works. A pianist sits at the middle of the bar and takes requests all night. On some ships you shout the song out. On others you write it on a slip of paper with your name and any occasion, then hand it over. On Royal Caribbean’s Dueling Pianos, guests fill out a small slip with the song, their name, and any special occasion, and the pianist works it into the show.

A tip helps. It always has. The old tradition is a napkin and a few dollars in the jar, and it still works exactly like you think. On some ships a big tip is basically a fast pass. A fifty or a hundred can stop a pianist mid song and jump your request to the front. Good pianists balance the paid requests against the free ones and read the room so nobody feels cheated.

The other thing to know is the clock. These rooms take a while to warm up. They usually open around nine and are slow at first, then turn into standing room only once the crowd finds it. On family ships the pianists keep it tame early and steer more adult after eleven. If you want a seat at the piano itself, come early. Some of these performers have genuine followings, and their regulars know to show up first.

What you get for all this is the part of the cruise people actually remember. A room full of strangers singing the same chorus at full volume. It is corny. It is also the best hour of the night more often than not.

You do not need to plan for it. You do not need to book it. You just need to know it exists and walk in before the seats are gone. If you want help picking a ship where the nightlife actually fits what you like, that is the kind of thing we sort out before you ever board.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
