People fight over the top decks. They assume higher means better. On a cruise ship the opposite is often true.
A ship is a lever. The higher you go, the more you feel every roll and pitch. The lowest passenger decks near the middle of the ship move the least. That is where the motion is quietest.
Think about a seesaw. The ends swing the most. The center barely moves. Your cabin works the same way. Forward and aft cabins feel more. Midship cabins feel less. High decks feel more. Low decks feel less.
This matters if you are prone to seasickness. A midship cabin on a lower deck is the calmest bed on the ship. It is also usually cheaper than the view everyone is bidding up ten decks above you. You get a smoother ride and you pay less for it. That is a rare thing in this business.
There are real reasons to book high. Some people want the balcony that looks down over the whole ship. Some want to be steps from the pool and the buffet. Those are fine reasons. Just book them on purpose, not because a higher number sounded like a better cabin.
The other thing nobody tells you is what sits above and below your cabin. A cabin under the pool deck can mean chairs dragging at six in the morning. A cabin under a nightclub can mean bass at midnight. A cabin near the elevator means foot traffic all day. The deck number tells you none of this. The deck plan does.
So read the deck plan before you pick. Find out what is above you and below you. Find the midship cabins on a lower deck if a smooth ride matters to you. The best cabin is the one that fits how you actually sail, not the one with the biggest number on the door.
If you want help reading a deck plan before you commit, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
