The Onboard Cooking School Is the Best Souvenir You Can Actually Use

You can bring home a fridge magnet. Or you can bring home the ability to make risotto that does not turn into wallpaper paste.

A lot of ships now have a real hands-on cooking school. Not a demo where a chef cooks and you watch and clap. An actual kitchen where you stand at your own station with your own knife and your own stove and you do the work.

Oceania started this. The Culinary Center on Oceania Riviera was the first hands-on cooking school at sea, and you cook at your own fully equipped workstation in a real teaching kitchen. That was fifteen years ago. It now runs more than sixty different classes across custom-built teaching kitchens with individual stations and professional-grade equipment. Some classes even tie into the port you are about to visit, so you learn the food before you go eat it.

Regent Seven Seas has its own version in the Culinary Arts Kitchen. Classes there start around one hundred twenty-nine dollars per guest and run about two hours, with hands-on instruction from chef instructors for every skill level. Carnival has one too. The Carnival Kitchen classes on the Excel-class ships book up fast, because it turns out people like making food more than they like watching someone else make it.

Here is why I keep steering people toward these. A shore excursion is over the second you reboard. A cooking class comes home with you. You will make that dish at your kitchen table in North Kingsville in February, and for twenty minutes you will be back on the ship.

The catch is that these classes are small on purpose. Individual stations means limited seats. They sell out early, sometimes before you sail. So this is one you book the day the planner opens, not the day you feel like it.
