Carnival Versus Royal Caribbean and Why the Answer Is Not the Ship

People ask me to settle this constantly. Carnival or Royal Caribbean. As if one of them is right and the other is a mistake.

Neither is a mistake. They are two very good cruise lines chasing two slightly different people. The trick is knowing which person you are before you book.

Start with the ships. Royal Caribbean builds the biggest ships in the world. Icon of the Seas holds more than five thousand guests at double occupancy and around seven thousand when every bed is full. If you want the surf simulator, the ice rink, the ten neighborhoods, the show that could sell tickets on land, Royal is playing that game harder than anyone.

Carnival is not trying to win that arms race. Carnival tends to keep fares lower and includes more of the dining and entertainment in the price you already paid. That matters more than the brochure photos suggest. A cheaper base fare with fewer upsells at every corner can end the week cheaper than a splashy fare that nickels you to death.

Here is the part nobody says out loud. The vibe is the real difference, not the tonnage. Carnival is loose and loud and unbothered and genuinely fun. Royal is polished and busy and built to keep a family of five moving from one activity to the next without a gap. One is a great party. The other is a great machine. Both are a good time. You just have to know your own speed.

So who wins. Pick Carnival if the sailing itself is the vacation and you want to spend less doing it. Pick Royal if the ship is the destination and you want the newest, biggest, most engineered version of a day at sea. Kids of wildly different ages usually tip the scale toward Royal. A short getaway where you mostly want to relax and laugh usually tips toward Carnival.

The mistake is picking the line first and forcing your trip to fit it. Pick the trip. The right line falls out of that almost every time. Itinerary, home port, budget, and who is coming with you will tell you more than any online argument ever will.

You can absolutely referee this fight yourself. You can also officiate your own boxing match. Results may vary. If you want someone to match the right ship to the actual people going, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
