The Drink Package Math Nobody Wants to Do

The cruise drink package is sold as a splurge. It is really a math problem. And most people never do the math.

Here is how it works. The package has a daily price. You pay that price every single day of the sailing, whether you drink or not. Sea day, port day, the day you feel a little green and stay in the cabin. You pay for all of them.

So the real question is simple. How many drinks a day do you need to buy for the package to pay for itself. Divide the daily package price by the average price of a drink. That number is your break even point. Hit it every day and you win. Fall short and you paid the cruise line for water you never poured.

Most people wildly overestimate how much they drink. You picture yourself with a cocktail in hand from the pool deck to the piano bar. In practice you have coffee at breakfast, nothing at lunch, a couple of drinks at dinner, and one nightcap before you fall asleep at nine. That is a fun day. It is also usually under the break even line.

Then there is the rule that surprises everyone. On most major lines, if one adult in the cabin buys the package, every adult in the cabin has to buy it too. So your break even is not just about you. It is about whether your travel partner drinks enough to justify their package as well. If you drink like a fish and they drink like a plant, the whole thing gets expensive fast.

The package is not a scam. It is a bet. And like most bets sold with a smile, the house set the price knowing exactly how much the average person drinks. Where the package genuinely wins is when you drink freely and you hate watching a running tab. There is real value in never thinking about the cost of the next round. Peace of mind counts for something. Just call it what it is and pay for it on purpose.

The other quiet winner is the specialty coffee, the bottled water, the fresh juice, and the soda that many packages fold in. If you are a three lattes a day person, the math shifts hard in your favor before a drop of alcohol enters the picture.

So do the boring arithmetic before you check the box. Count your honest drinks, not your vacation fantasy drinks. If you want help running your actual numbers before you book, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
