Most cruisers in the Arabian Gulf are looking at Dubai. Muscat sits down the coast, quieter and older, and most people treat it as a fuel stop between the flashy ports. That is a mistake.
Muscat is the capital of Oman. Ships dock at Port Sultan Qaboos, with mountains rising on one side and the old town spread out on the other. It is one of the few big cities in the region that never bulldozed its own character to chase a skyline.
Here is the part that makes it easy. The Muttrah Souq is a short walk from where your ship ties up. You can be haggling over frankincense and silver within minutes of stepping off the gangway, no tour bus required. Frankincense is not a gift shop gimmick here. This coast has traded it for thousands of years.
The other reason to go is the contrast. Dubai is loud and new and proud of it. Muscat is the opposite, low buildings and forts and a pace that does not rush you. If you have already seen the shopping malls and the fountains, this is the antidote.
One honest tip. Oman takes modesty seriously, so cover your shoulders and knees, especially if you plan to visit the Grand Mosque. Bring a scarf if you are a woman and check the visiting hours before you go, because they are limited and non-worshippers are only allowed in the mornings. Dress right and the whole city opens up to you.
Muscat is not a place you conquer in one port day. It is a place that makes you wish the ship stayed overnight. If you want help finding an itinerary that gives this port more than a passing glance, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
