The main dining room on a cruise is included. The steakhouse down the hall is not. That upcharge is where most first timers get surprised.
Cruise lines sell a specialty dining package. Buy a set number of meals up front and the per meal price drops below what you would pay walking in. The trade is that you commit before you know how hungry you will be on night four.
Here is the part people miss. The package almost always costs less when you buy it before you board than when you buy it at the podium on day one. Pre cruise pricing is the deal. The onboard price is the penalty for waiting.
There is a second layer. On several lines a dining package does not include your reservations automatically. You buy the package, then you still have to book the actual tables. The best nights and the best times go first. If you wait until you are on the ship, you are choosing from what is left.
Watch the fine print on each meal too. Some packages make your first dinner land on night one or night two. Some restaurants carry an extra charge even inside the package. A hibachi seat or a tasting menu room can cost more on top of the thing you already paid for. Read that before you assume everything is covered.
Now the actual math. Count the nights you truly want a special dinner. For most people that is two or three, not seven. A three night package at the pre cruise rate usually beats paying a la carte for three dinners, especially once you add an appetizer and dessert. Buy the size that matches your appetite, not the size that sounds impressive.
Skip the package entirely if you only want one nice dinner. One steakhouse night booked on its own is cheaper than a multi meal package you will not finish. The package is for people who plan to eat out most nights. Everyone else is better off booking a single reservation and calling it done.
You can absolutely sort this out at the podium on embarkation day. You can also assemble furniture without reading the instructions. Results may vary.
If you want help running the numbers for your specific sailing and locking in the tables before they fill, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
