Most cruise lines sell you the ship. Azamara sells you the place the ship happens to be parked next to.
That is the whole personality of this line. The ships are small by modern standards. They hold a few hundred guests, not a few thousand. There is no water park. There is no go-kart track. There is a pool, a few bars, a spa, and dinner.
What Azamara does instead is stay. The ships linger in port late into the evening, and they overnight in places other lines treat as a quick stop. You get dinner ashore. You get a town after the day trippers leave. You see a place at night, which is when a lot of places are actually worth seeing.
The signature piece is something they call an AzAmazing Evening. It is a complimentary shoreside event built around local culture. Think a private concert in a place you would never get into on your own. It is included, not an upsell, and that is rarer than it sounds.
Here is who this line is for. You care about where you go more than what you do onboard. You would rather have a long dinner in a small port than a third waterslide. You are fine with a quieter ship and an older crowd. You like the idea of a nearly all inclusive fare where tips, standard drinks, and basic wifi come in the price.
Here is who it is not for. Families with kids who need constant motion. There is no kids club worth the name. People who want a floating theme park. People who get bored without a show every night. The entertainment is pleasant and small scale, not Broadway.
The honest downsides go further. The ships are not new, and you will feel their age in a few corners. The price can look high next to a mainstream line until you add up everything that mainstream fare leaves out. Do that math before you decide it is expensive.
Azamara lives in a specific lane. It is more relaxed than true luxury and more refined than mass market. If you have done the big ships and keep wishing you had more time in each port, this is the line that was built for exactly that itch.
If you want help figuring out whether this fits the trip you have in mind, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
