Chiloe is a big island hanging off the bottom of Chile, and most cruisers have never heard of it. The main town is Castro. Your ship may stop there on the way to the Chilean fjords, and most people treat it as filler.
That is a mistake. Castro is one of the strangest and most charming stops in all of South America.
The first thing you see from the water is the palafitos. These are wooden houses built on stilts right over the tidewater, painted in colors that look like someone spilled a box of crayons. At low tide they stand on their wooden legs in the mud. At high tide the water comes right up under them. People still live in them, and some are now little cafes and guesthouses.
Then there are the churches. Chiloe has a whole family of wooden churches built by Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, and a group of them carry UNESCO World Heritage status. They are made entirely of native timber, joined without the metal you would expect. The one in the middle of Castro is the headline act, bright yellow and purple, built of wood from top to bottom. It does not look like any church you have seen.
Here is the insider part. Chiloe has its own food, and the dish to find is curanto. It is a pile of shellfish, meat, potato, and dumplings cooked in a pit in the ground over hot stones, covered with big leaves. It is a lot of work for the cook and very little work for you. Eat it and skip lunch.
Second tip. Chiloe runs on its own weather, which is to say it rains, a lot, even when the forecast promises otherwise. Bring a real rain layer, not the free poncho from your last excursion. The island is green for a reason.
Castro is not polished. It is working, a little weathered, and completely itself. You can buy fridge magnets at the next big port. You cannot buy a town on stilts anywhere else.
If you have a South America or Patagonia sailing on your radar and want help picking the one that actually stops here, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
