Every cruise adds a daily gratuity to your bill. And every cruise, someone marches to guest services to have it taken off. They think they are beating the system. They are mostly just confusing it.
Here is what that charge actually is. It is a pooled tip that gets split among the people who clean your cabin, serve your food, and run the dining room behind the scenes. It is not a line fee the cruise line pockets. It is the wage structure the whole crew is built around.
So when you remove it, the money does not go back into some fairness fund. It comes out of the pool. The person who made your bed twice a day and learned your coffee order by Tuesday is the one who feels it. That is the part the internet threads leave out.
The usual argument is that you would rather tip in cash so it goes to the right people. Fair instinct. The problem is that cash in one person’s hand often still has to be reported and shared under the crew’s own rules, so you are not routing around the pool as cleverly as you hoped. You can absolutely tip extra in cash on top of the auto gratuity, and good crew deserve it. Removing the base and handing a twenty to one steward is not a workaround. It is a smaller tip wearing a generous costume.
There is a real reason to visit guest services, and it is service that genuinely failed. If something was broken and nobody fixed it after you asked, that is a conversation to have. A quiet adjustment after a bad experience is reasonable. Yanking the whole thing on night one because you read that you could is a different thing entirely.
If the daily amount bothers you, the honest move is to price it in before you book. It is a known number. You can see it the day you reserve, and you can prepay it so it is handled before you ever board. That turns a nagging line item into a settled one, which is a nicer way to start a vacation anyway.
None of this means you owe anyone blind generosity. It means the auto gratuity is closer to part of the fare than most people treat it. Decide how you feel about that before you sail, not at the desk with a line forming behind you.
If you want help figuring out the real all in cost of a cruise before you book, gratuities included, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
