Celebrity Edge Class Ships Actually Live Up to the Hype

Celebrity’s Edge class ships get talked about a lot. Usually that means overpromising and underdelivering.

Not this time. These ships genuinely changed how cruise ship design works. The Magic Carpet moves up and down the side of the ship. Infinite Verandas open your stateroom to the ocean with the push of a button. The Retreat creates a ship within a ship for suite guests.

Celebrity Edge launched in 2018. Celebrity Apex followed in 2020. Celebrity Beyond joined in 2022. Celebrity Ascent rounds out the class in 2023.

These ships work best for couples who want modern luxury without the stuffiness of traditional premium lines. The dining is excellent. The design feels fresh instead of trying to recreate a shopping mall at sea. Service hits the sweet spot between attentive and intrusive.

The downsides are real though. These ships cost more than mass market options. Families with young kids will find limited activities compared to Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. The innovative features sometimes break down more than boring reliable ones.

If you want to cruise but think most ships look like floating Vegas casinos, Edge class might change your mind. If you want rock climbing walls and go kart tracks, look elsewhere.
