River cruises dock in the heart of cities. Ocean cruises dock wherever there happens to be a port.
That difference shapes everything else. On a river cruise through Europe, you wake up in Amsterdam, walk off the ship, and you’re already exploring canals and museums. No shuttle buses. No port areas designed for tourists. You’re in the actual city.
Ocean cruises offer scale that rivers cannot match. The newest Royal Caribbean ships carry 7,000 passengers and feature surf simulators, rock climbing walls, and Broadway shows. River ships max out around 190 passengers. The evening entertainment might be a local folk group or a lecture about tomorrow’s destination.
River cruising costs more per day but includes almost everything. Shore excursions, wine with dinner, gratuities, and Wi-Fi come standard. Ocean cruises start cheaper but nickel and dime you. Drinks, specialty dining, excursions, and Wi-Fi all cost extra.
Ocean cruises work for families. Kids clubs, pools, and endless activities keep everyone busy. River cruises skew older. Most river cruise lines set minimum ages at 12 or 18. The atmosphere is quiet and educational rather than energetic and entertaining.
If you want to see multiple European cities without packing and unpacking, river cruising makes sense. If you want the ship to be the destination with dining options, entertainment, and activities, ocean cruising delivers that. If you want help sorting this out, that is literally what we do.
