Ocean cruises get all the attention. River cruises get the destinations.
On an ocean cruise, you wake up to water. On a river cruise, you wake up in the middle of a European village or floating past castles. Your ship docks right downtown. No tender boats. No hour-long bus rides from some industrial port.
Ocean ships carry 3,000 people. River ships carry 150. You will know your fellow passengers by name. The dining room staff will remember that you hate brussels sprouts. This appeals to some people and horrifies others.
Ocean cruises offer Broadway shows and rock climbing walls. River cruises offer wine tastings and guest historians. Think PBS instead of ESPN. The average age reflects this difference. River cruising skews older because it costs more and younger travelers often want the party atmosphere of big ships.
Weather matters more on rivers. Low water levels can change your itinerary. High water can too. Ocean cruises just sail around storms. River cruises have to deal with whatever the Danube throws at them.
Price per day tells the whole story. Ocean cruises start around $100 per person per day. River cruises start around $400. That river cruise includes shore excursions, wine with dinner, and gratuities. The ocean cruise charges extra for everything including the wifi.
Neither is better. They serve different purposes. Ocean cruising works for families, first-time cruisers, and anyone who wants entertainment variety. River cruising works for couples, history buffs, and travelers who prioritize destinations over amenities.
