The Best Time to Book a Cruise Is Not When You Think

Most people wait for a sale. They figure the cruise line will drop prices closer to the sailing date and they can swoop in at the last minute with a deal. Sometimes that works. More often it does not, and they end up paying more for a worse cabin than the person who booked eight months ago.

Here is how cruise pricing actually works. Ships fill from the outside in. The best cabins at the best prices go first. As inventory tightens, prices rise. Cruise lines occasionally discount unsold inventory close to departure, but those are usually interior cabins on sailings that did not sell well. You are not getting a balcony on a Caribbean sailing in February for half price in January. That ship sailed, figuratively speaking.

The sweet spot for most mainstream cruise lines is six to twelve months out. You get solid cabin selection, reasonable pricing, and enough time to plan flights and shore excursions without everything being picked over. For peak sailings like holiday weeks, spring break, or Alaska in summer, push that window to twelve to eighteen months. Those sailings fill fast and they know it.

There is also a real advantage to booking early that most people overlook. Early saver and early booking rates typically come with price protection. If the cruise line drops the price after you book, you can usually get that lower rate applied to your reservation. You are not locked into whatever you paid on day one. You just have to watch for it, or have someone watch for it on your behalf.

One more thing worth knowing. The deposit is usually fully refundable up to a certain point, often 90 days before sailing depending on the line and the fare type. Booking early does not mean you are committed forever. It means you have a seat at the table while you decide.

If you have a specific sailing in mind, waiting to see if it gets cheaper is a gamble that rarely pays off the way people hope. The cabin you want at the price you want is most available the day it goes on sale.

If you want help figuring out the right time to book your specific sailing, that is exactly what we do.
