Cruising alone has a reputation problem. People picture one person eating dinner while couples clink glasses nearby. That picture is wrong, and Norwegian Cruise Line has spent fifteen years proving it.
Norwegian launched the first dedicated solo cabins on Norwegian Epic in 2010. These are called studio cabins. They are small inside rooms built for exactly one person, and Epic still has the largest solo complex at sea. The point of them is simple. You do not pay the single supplement.
Here is the thing most people do not know. When you book a normal cabin by yourself, the cruise line charges you for two people. That is the single supplement, and it is often a full one hundred percent on top of the base fare. A solo cabin is priced for one. On some sailings that saves you real money.
The cabins are tight. A studio runs around ninety nine square feet, and that is the smallest room on the ship. There is a bed, clever storage, and a bathroom. No window on the older ships, though the newer Prima and Viva studios feel more modern and give you a proper separate bathroom. If you need space and silence, this is not your room. You can also sleep in an airport. Same energy.
The real trick is the Studio Lounge. It is a private space just for solo guests with free coffee, snacks, and a daily hosted meetup. The host organizes group dinners for anyone who wants one. You can join or you can vanish back to your cabin. Nobody makes you socialize, and nobody makes you eat alone either. Norwegian has expanded solo pricing to inside, oceanview, and balcony cabins too, so you are not stuck with just the studio.
Norwegian is not the only option. Holland America put twelve single oceanview studios on Koningsdam, and other lines have started adding solo rooms. None of them have the Studio Lounge though. That lounge is the whole reason Norwegian owns this category. One warning. Solo cabins are limited and they sell out early, so this is not a last minute bargain.
Solo cruising fits a certain traveler. You want your own schedule. You want the option to meet people without a group project attached. If that sounds like you, and you want help finding the right ship and sailing before the solo cabins are gone, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
