MSC owns a luxury cruise line. Most people have no idea. It is called Explora Journeys, and its third ship arrives this summer.
Explora III sets sail in summer 2026. That is right now, more or less. It is the newest hardware in a fleet that is still very young, which matters more than it sounds.
Here is the pitch. This is all suite, ocean facing living, with 461 suites and a lot of room to breathe. There are seven restaurants and twelve bars and lounges spread across the ship. The staffing runs about one crew member for every 1.25 guests, which is the kind of ratio that makes service feel personal instead of processed.
The design leans quiet and modern. Think heated pools, a Chef’s Table, a cellar, even an outdoor cigar lounge at the whisky bar. Explora is chasing the same guest that Regent and Silversea have owned for years. The difference is Explora is doing it with brand new ships and a look that feels more European hotel than cruise ship.
Now the honest part. This is not a value play. You pay for the space and the crew and the fact that almost everything is included, and the bill reflects that. If you want a rock climbing wall and a water slide and a kids club running at full volume, this is the wrong ship. There are no formal nights, which some people love and some people quietly miss.
The other thing to watch is a new brand still finding its rhythm. Three ships in, Explora is not yet the household name that its competitors are. That can be a feature or a risk depending on how much you like being an early adopter.
So who is this for. Couples and solo travelers who want a calm, spacious, all included ship and do not need a theme park attached to it. If that is you, Explora III belongs on your short list.
You can absolutely research a luxury line on your own and guess whether it fits. You can also order a steak blindfolded. It usually works out, but why risk it. If you want help sorting out whether Explora is your speed, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
