The Theme Cruise Is a Different Animal and You Should Know Before You Book

A theme cruise is not a regular cruise with a costume night. It is an entire ship taken over by one idea. Sometimes that idea is a band. Sometimes it is a decade. Sometimes it is a knitting club with strong opinions.

Here is how it works. A production company buys out the whole ship, called a full ship charter, and fills it with programming built around the theme. The line still runs the hotel and the galley. The company runs everything else, from the lineup to the trivia to the deck party at midnight.

The biggest name in the music space is Sixthman. They have produced over 160 charters, and they now sit inside a Norwegian division called Experiences at Sea, which runs a wall of back to back charters aboard Norwegian Pearl. If you have ever heard of the Bon Jovi cruise or a rock band you love sailing with a few thousand of their closest fans, that is the model.

Then there are the decade cruises. The 80s Cruise is exactly what it sounds like, a floating time machine with the actual artists on board. StarVista Live runs the Flower Power Cruise for the 60s crowd and the 70s Rock and Romance Cruise for people who want their nostalgia a little softer. These sell out early and they sell out to a very specific person. That person knows every word.

So who is this for. If you love a niche and you want to be surrounded by people who love it exactly as much, a theme cruise is the best vacation you will ever take. You will not have to explain yourself once. If you are the type who wants a quiet balcony and a book, this is your personal nightmare. There is no off switch on a chartered ship.

One thing to watch. Theme cruises are usually priced higher than the same sailing sold as a normal cruise, because you are paying for the programming and the talent, not just the cabin. The itinerary is often an afterthought too. Nobody books the 80s Cruise for the ports. You book it because the ship is the party.

You can absolutely book one of these directly. You can also show up to a costume party without checking the theme. Results may vary. The charter market is a strange corner of cruising with its own rules on deposits, cabin categories, and who actually holds your money.

If you want help figuring out whether a theme cruise fits you, or which one is worth the premium, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
