The Cruise Ship Library Is the Quietest Room You Never Visit

Most passengers walk past the library a dozen times and never go in. Their loss.

Nearly every ship has one. On the big lines it is a small nook with a few shelves and a locked glass case. On the luxury lines it is a room built for it. The library on Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer has leather floors, which is a sentence that sounds made up but is not.

The undisputed champion belongs to Cunard. Queen Mary 2 has long claimed the largest library at sea, with somewhere between 8,500 and 10,000 books depending on who is counting. It sits at the front of the ship with ocean views and glass fronted shelves and real wood paneling. Cunard staffed it with actual professional librarians. That is not a gimmick. That is a cruise line that understands what a sea day is for.

Here is why it matters even if you are not a reader. The library is the one public room on the ship with no music, no announcements, and no sales pitch. Nobody is trying to sell you a photo package or a watch. It is usually empty, it is usually air conditioned, and it usually has the best chairs on the whole ship. You can borrow a book, read the day’s news, or just sit and watch the water go by.

A few things worth knowing before you go looking. Most ship libraries run on the honor system, so you check a book out and drop it back before you disembark. The good ones stock destination guides for the ports you are actually visiting, which beats reading a review on your phone. And the fancier the line, the fancier the room, so the smaller luxury ships punch way above their size here.
