No You Do Not Pay More for a Travel Advisor

Here is the myth that will not die. People believe that booking a cruise through a travel advisor costs more than booking it yourself. It is the single most common thing I hear, and it is wrong.

The price of the cruise is the price of the cruise. Cruise lines set the fare. A good advisor books you into that exact same fare, in that exact same cabin, on that exact same sailing. You are not paying a markup to sit across from a human being.

So where does the money come from. The cruise line pays the advisor a commission out of its own pocket. That commission was already baked into the fare before you ever went looking. Book direct and the cruise line simply keeps that slice for itself. You did not save anything. You just skipped the part where someone works on your behalf for free.

You can absolutely book a cruise on your own. You can also do your own taxes. Some people love it and some people end up on hold for forty minutes trying to fix a shore excursion time.

The real value shows up when something goes sideways. A price drops after you book and someone catches it. A ship reroutes and someone rebooks your flights. A cabin category you wanted opens up and someone is watching for it. That is the part you cannot see on a booking page, and it is the part that matters when you are standing in a terminal at six in the morning.

There are advisors who charge a planning fee, and they should tell you that up front. Ask the question before you commit. But the idea that using an advisor automatically inflates your fare is just not how any of this works.
