The Last Morning of Your Cruise Is the One Nobody Plans For

Everybody plans the first day of a cruise. Almost nobody plans the last one. That is the morning that turns a great week into a stressful blur.

Here is what happens if you do nothing. The night before you get off, you put your bags in the hallway. The crew collects them. You will not see them again until you are standing in a giant terminal hall staring at hundreds of identical suitcases.

You get a colored luggage tag and a rough time to leave the ship. Groups get called in waves. If your flight is early and your tag is late, you are stuck. That is the whole problem in one sentence.

There is another way, and I wish more people used it. It is called self assist, or walk off. You keep your own bags and carry everything off yourself in the first wave. No hallway drop the night before. No waiting for your color to be called. You just leave.

The catch is you have to carry every bag down a gangway and possibly up a ramp. If you overpacked, this is where you find out. If you can handle your own luggage, self assist is almost always faster.

Timing matters more than people think. The ship clears customs before anyone gets off, and that clearance time is not something you control. Build a real cushion. I do not book a flight that leaves before noon out of most cruise ports, and I would rather you aim later than that.

Breakfast is the other trap. The main dining room and the buffet get slammed on the last morning because everyone eats at once. Go early or go late. The middle is a zoo.

Settle your onboard account the night before too. Check the statement they slide under your door. Charges get disputed all the time, and it is far easier to sort out a mistake at the front desk than from your kitchen table three weeks later.

One more thing about the room. You have to be out of your cabin early, usually right after breakfast, so the crew can flip it for the next guests. Pack the night before. Do not leave your phone charger in the wall outlet. People do this constantly and I have opinions.

Disembarkation is not hard. It just rewards the people who thought about it ahead of time and punishes the ones who did not. Pick your method, protect your flight time, and settle your bill.

If you want help matching your walk off plan to your actual flight, that is literally what we do. Send me your itinerary and I will tell you exactly how tight your morning is.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
