Champagne Bay Is the South Pacific Stop People Cannot Quite Place on a Map

Vanuatu has a beach so good the name sounds made up. It is called Champagne Bay. It sits on Espiritu Santo, the largest island in the country, and cruise ships tender you right to it.

Most people book a South Pacific cruise for Fiji or New Caledonia. Then Champagne Bay shows up on the itinerary and nobody knows what it is. That is exactly why it is worth your time.

The water is the kind of clear that makes your camera look broken. White sand, warm shallows, and almost no development. There is no cruise port here in the usual sense. Ships anchor offshore and tender guests in, which keeps the crowds smaller than a big built up pier ever would.

Here is the first thing worth knowing. Espiritu Santo is home to the SS President Coolidge, a former luxury ocean liner that was turned into a troopship and sank here in 1942. It is one of the most accessible large shipwreck dives in the world, close to shore and reachable without a long boat ride. If you dive, this is a rare chance to swim through a piece of history most people only read about.

The second thing is Million Dollar Point, also on Santo. After the war, huge amounts of American military equipment were dumped into the sea rather than shipped home. Today it is an underwater junkyard of jeeps and machinery that has become a reef. You can see a fair bit of it while snorkeling, no scuba certification required.

A word of planning. Because this is a tender port, weather matters more than usual. Rough seas can cancel the stop entirely, and there is no backup pier to fall back on. Build your day around the beach and the water, not around a packed schedule of tours that assume everything goes perfectly.

Bring reef safe sunscreen, water shoes, and cash in small amounts. Facilities are simple. That is the whole appeal. You came a very long way to find a place that has not been paved over yet.

Champagne Bay is not a shopping stop or a big excursion hub. It is a beach day with real substance underneath it, literally. If you want help finding a South Pacific sailing that includes it, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
