Most people think the Caribbean is islands. Cartagena is not an island. It is a walled colonial city on the coast of Colombia, and it is one of the best ports in the region.
The old town is the reason to go. You can walk for hours inside the walls, wander past the forts, and eat real Colombian food without ever feeling far from the ship. It is a place built for wandering, not for a two hour bus tour.
Here is the part travelers miss. Cartagena is not a beach port. If you get off the ship expecting sand and a lounge chair, you will be confused and slightly sweaty. The reward here is the city itself, the stone streets and the shade of old balconies, not a stretch of coast.
A small tip that saves you money. The cruise terminal has free Wi-Fi and shops for souvenirs right where you step off, so there is no reason to buy an overpriced data pass just to message home. Do your talking to the family from the terminal, then go get lost in the old town on purpose.
One more thing worth knowing. The heat is real and it is humid, so the smart move is an early morning in the old town before the afternoon sun turns the walls into an oven. Cartagena rewards people who start early and slow down. That is a rare combination for a cruise port.
If you have written Cartagena off as a place the ship happens to stop, you have it backwards. This is a port worth planning around, not around. If you want help finding an itinerary that gives it real time instead of a rushed morning, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
