Celebrity just took delivery of its newest ship, Celebrity Xcel. It is the fifth and final ship in the Edge class.
That matters more than it sounds. The first Edge ship launched years ago as a bet. The bet was that a mainstream premium line could build something that looked like a luxury yacht and still carry a few thousand people. Xcel is the version that gets to use everything they learned.
Edge-class ships are known for one trick above all. The Magic Carpet is a cantilevered platform that moves up and down the side of the hull. Sometimes it is a bar high above the water. Sometimes it drops down to become your tender dock. It is the kind of gimmick that should feel silly and somehow does not.
Celebrity is also adding a new onboard experience on Xcel that it calls Celebrity Xcite. The line is positioning this ship as a fresh step rather than a copy of its sisters. If you sailed an earlier Edge ship and loved it, this is the same family with the rough edges sanded down.
Here is who Celebrity Xcel is for. It is for the couple who wants something nicer than the big party lines but is not ready to pay true luxury prices. The food is a real strength. The design feels like a boutique hotel more than a floating mall. The crowd skews adult without being adults only.
Now the honest part. This is still a large ship carrying thousands of people. If you want quiet and tiny and nobody around the pool, this is not that. The pricing has crept up over the years, and the drink and wifi packages add up fast once you are aboard. You are paying for a premium experience, and Celebrity knows it.
The other thing worth saying is that a brand new ship sells its first year on the word new. Novelty is not an itinerary. Look at where this ship actually sails and whether those ports are ones you want, because a gorgeous ship going somewhere boring is still a boring week.
Celebrity has quietly become the line I recommend to people who think they have outgrown mainstream cruising but flinch at luxury sticker prices. Xcel is the cleanest version of that pitch yet.
If you want help deciding whether this ship fits you, or whether an older and cheaper Edge sister makes more sense, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
