Luxury Cruising Is Not One Thing and Neither Is the Price

Luxury cruising sounds like a single idea. It is not. Two ships can both call themselves luxury and give you completely different vacations.

Start with what the word actually buys. On a real luxury line the fare stops nickel and diming you. Seabourn includes all your meals, premium drinks, gratuities, and even caviar service in the base price. Silversea does the same and every one of its ships gives every guest a butler, not just the top suites.

Then there is Regent Seven Seas, which built its whole identity around the word included. Regent throws in unlimited shore excursions, which most luxury lines do not. Its top Ultimate All-Inclusive fare goes further and adds roundtrip flights, airport transfers, and a private chauffeur to and from the ship. That is a different definition of luxury than a nice cabin and a good dinner.

This is where price gets confusing. A luxury fare looks enormous next to a mainstream line. But the mainstream price is a starting bid. By the time you add drinks, tips, wifi, specialty dining, and shore tours, the gap narrows in a way people never expect. Sometimes it closes almost entirely. Sometimes it does not, and that is fine too.

The harder question is temperament, not money. Luxury cruising means small ships, quiet spaces, and no water slides. If your idea of a great sea day is a lounge chair, a book, and a bartender who remembers your name, you will love it. If you want a go-kart track and a comedy club, you will feel like you overpaid for a library. Neither answer is wrong. They are just different people.

My advice is to stop shopping the sticker price and start shopping the inclusions. Read what the fare actually covers, then do the math against how you really travel. A cheaper fare that you spend all week adding to is not always the cheaper trip.

If you want someone to run those numbers next to your travel personality, that is literally what we do. Bring me two fares and I will tell you which one is actually the deal.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
