Prepay Your Cruise Tips or Pay More Later

Cruise gratuities are quietly the fastest growing line item in cruising. They have crept up almost every year. Most people never notice until the bill posts.

Here is the number that gets attention. Automatic tips have climbed from around fourteen dollars and fifty cents per person per day in 2022 to over twenty dollars a day on some lines in 2026. That is not a rounding error. That is a real trend.

The lines rolled out fresh hikes this year. Carnival went to seventeen dollars a day for standard cabins and nineteen for suites back in April. Holland America moved to eighteen dollars for standard cabins and twenty for suites on June first. Norwegian sits at twenty dollars a day for standard rooms and twenty five inside The Haven.

Now do the math for a family. Four people on a seven night sailing can pay close to six hundred dollars in tips alone. That is a flight. That is a night in a very nice hotel. That is real money most people forget to budget.

Here is the part worth knowing. When a line announces an increase, prepaying your gratuities before you sail usually locks in the older lower rate. Book now, pay the tips now, and the later hike does not touch you. Wait until you are onboard and you pay whatever the current number is.

One more thing people miss. The service fee added to drinks and specialty dining is separate from your daily tips. Holland America bumped that from eighteen percent to twenty percent this year. You cannot remove that one. It is baked into every cocktail and every steak.

None of this means tipping is bad. The crew earns every dollar. It just means the number is bigger than the brochure suggested, and it keeps moving.
