The Buffet Is Not Free

Every cruise line markets their buffets as “complimentary dining.” This is technically true. It is also completely meaningless.

You paid for that buffet when you bought your cruise. The cost is baked into your fare just like housekeeping, entertainment, and the pool deck. Carnival did not suddenly become a charity when they started serving mac and cheese at 2 AM.

The real question is whether you are getting good value for what you paid. A $500 cruise with mediocre food might be a better deal than a $1,200 cruise with amazing food. Or it might not. The food is not free either way.

This matters because cruise lines use “free” dining to justify higher base fares. They bundle services you cannot opt out of and call them complimentary. It is like a hotel charging $300 per night and bragging about free towels.

Smart cruisers focus on total cost and total value. They compare what they actually pay versus what they actually get. They do not get distracted by marketing copy about complimentary this and included that.

If you want help calculating the real value of different cruise options, that is literally what we do.
