Your phone becomes a very expensive camera the moment the ship leaves port. No signal. No texts. And you still need to tell your teenager where to meet for dinner.
Every major cruise line has a fix, and it lives inside the ship’s app. There is a chat feature that lets everyone in your group message each other over the ship wifi. It works even when your phone has zero bars in the middle of the ocean.
The catch is that some lines charge for it and some do not. Royal Caribbean recently made guest to guest chat free in its app. It used to cost about two dollars per person per day, so this is a real change and a nice one. Carnival still charges for its HUB app chat, but it is a one time fee of five dollars per person for the whole cruise. That is not per day. Pay it once and you are done.
Here is the part people get wrong. You have to download the app and set it up before you board. Do it at home on your own wifi while the download is fast and free. Have every person in your group do the same. Trying to install an app for four family members while standing in the terminal is a special kind of misery.
The chat is not just for wrangling kids, though it is very good at that. It is how you find your spouse who wandered off to the casino. It is how you tell your friends the show got moved. It is how you avoid the old routine of leaving a note on the cabin door and hoping for the best.
One honest limit. The chat only works between people on the same sailing who have all set it up. It will not text your mom back home. For that you still need a wifi package, and that is a separate cost and a separate decision.
So before your next cruise, download the app, log in with your booking, and turn on chat for everyone traveling with you. It takes ten minutes and it saves you from standing at the buffet at seven o’clock wondering where half your group went.
