Most people spend weeks picking the right ship. They compare pools, restaurants, entertainment, cabin sizes. Then they book a seven-night Caribbean cruise and spend the majority of their time on a floating resort that happens to stop somewhere briefly before moving on.
The ship is transportation. Comfortable, often impressive transportation. But if you choose your itinerary based on the ship, you may end up visiting ports you do not care about, skipping ports you would love, and wondering why the trip felt a little hollow.
Here is the thing nobody tells you upfront. A beautiful ship sailing to forgettable ports is a less memorable trip than a modest ship sailing to places that genuinely move you. The ports are where the stories come from. The ship is where you sleep.
I have talked to people who have sailed the same Caribbean loop four times on different cruise lines. They love the ships. They have essentially seen the same islands over and over. Meanwhile, someone books a repositioning cruise on a twenty-year-old vessel through the Norwegian fjords and comes back an entirely different person. The ship was fine. The scenery was unforgettable.
This is not a knock on the big beautiful ships. Some of them are genuinely worth sailing just to experience them. But that should be a conscious choice. Go on Icon of the Seas because you want the waterpark and the neighborhoods and the spectacle. Do not go on it hoping Nassau delivers the trip of a lifetime.
Start with where you want to go. Then find a ship that gets you there. That is a different way to shop for a cruise and it tends to produce better trips.
If you want help thinking through it that way, that is exactly what we do here.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
