A tiny typo on your reservation can keep you off the ship. Not might. Can.
Cruise lines are strict about this for a simple reason. The name on your booking has to match your travel document exactly. Celebrity puts it plainly. The name on your passport should match the name on your reservation. Royal Caribbean goes further and says the name on the reservation must be identical to the name on your ID.
Identical means identical. If your passport reads Michael and your booking says Mike, that is a mismatch. If your passport has a middle name and your booking skipped it, that is a mismatch too. A dropped letter, a swapped vowel, an old nickname that snuck into the form. The gangway is a bad place to discover any of it.
The one that catches people most is marriage. You booked under your married name and your passport still says maiden. Royal Caribbean addresses this directly. If your name no longer matches your ID due to marriage, the name on the reservation needs to be exactly as it reads on your passport or other proof of nationality. The passport wins. Your reservation bends to it, not the other way around.
So check the booking the day you make it. Pull out your passport and read it letter by letter against the confirmation. Do not go by memory. People misremember their own documents more than you would think. You renew a passport and the format changes. You never noticed the hyphen. Read the actual book.
The good news is that a genuine spelling correction is usually fixable before you sail. Lines generally allow you to fix an error up until final documents are issued, which is often a few weeks out. The catch is timing. The earlier you flag it, the smoother it goes, especially when your cruise is tied to a flight booking that also has to match.
If you booked through me, this is one less thing for you to chase. I check names against documents and I handle the correction request with the line. Many reservations stay under the agency, which means the cruise line wants the agent to submit the change anyway. That is the whole point of having one.
Read your name tonight. All of it. If something looks off, send me a photo of your passport page and your confirmation and I will sort it out. Better now than at a counter with your luggage at your feet.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
