What to Do About Seasickness Before It Ruins Your Cruise

Most people who get seasick on a cruise waited too long to do anything about it. By the time you feel queasy, your best options are already behind you.

The mistake is treating seasickness like a headache. You do not wait for the pain and then react. You set up defenses before the ship ever leaves the dock.

If you are prone to motion sickness, the scopolamine patch is the heavy hitter. It goes on the hairless skin behind your ear, and here is the part people miss. You have to apply it at least four hours before you need it, and one patch lasts up to three days. You need a prescription, so ask your doctor before the trip, not the night before you sail. Never cut the patch, and never wear more than one at a time.

If pills are more your speed, meclizine, sold as Bonine, and dimenhydrinate, sold as Dramamine, both work and are available over the counter. They start quickly, which makes them useful for as needed relief. Two things worth knowing. They can make you drowsy, and mixing any of these with alcohol makes the drowsiness much worse. That poolside drink is not worth the nap you did not plan.

Then there are the low tech tricks. Ginger, green apples, and plain crackers get sworn by all over the internet. There is no hard proof they work, but they are cheap and harmless, so pack some. What actually helps is fresh air and a fixed point. Get on deck, look at the horizon, and let your eyes and your inner ear agree on what is happening. Staring at your phone in an interior cabin does the opposite.

One more thing. Eat light before you sail. Heavy, greasy, spicy food gives your stomach a head start on rebelling. Crackers and water beat a big breakfast every time on day one.

The truth is that most cruisers never feel a thing, and the ones who do usually recover in a day once their body adjusts. But if you know you are sensitive, plan for it like you plan everything else. A patch you filled at home beats a green apple you grabbed in a panic. If you want help sorting out which cruise and which cabin suit a queasy traveler, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
