Why Everyone Skips Curacao and You Shouldn’t

Most Caribbean cruise itineraries hit the same tired trio: Jamaica, Mexico, Bahamas. Meanwhile, Curacao sits 40 miles off Venezuela’s coast, quietly being one of the best ports in the Caribbean.

The capital Willemstad looks like Amsterdam had a baby with the tropics. Dutch colonial buildings painted in sherbet colors line the harbor. The whole historic area is a UNESCO World Heritage site, which sounds fancy but really just means the architecture survived 400 years without anyone screwing it up.

Here’s what the cruise lines won’t tell you. Curacao sits outside the hurricane belt. While other islands are boarding up windows from June to November, Curacao enjoys steady 80-degree weather and trade winds year round.

The beaches are another story entirely. Most cruise passengers head to the crowded strip near the port. Walk 15 minutes east to Playa Cas Abou instead. White sand, crystal water, and about 90% fewer cruise ship crowds.

The island runs on Dutch efficiency with Caribbean charm. English, Dutch, Spanish, and Papiamento are all official languages. Your server will probably speak all four better than you speak one.

If you want to visit a Caribbean island that doesn’t feel like a theme park designed for tourists, Curacao delivers. The locals actually live there year round. Imagine that.
