Most first-time cruisers pick their cabin based on price alone. This is like choosing a hotel room by cost and ignoring that it’s next to the elevator shaft.
Deck 1 cabins sit directly above the engine room. You’ll hear mechanical humming all night. Deck 2 isn’t much better. The sweet spot for interior and oceanview cabins is Decks 6 through 8 on most ships.
Avoid cabins directly under the pool deck, buffet, or sports court. Late-night chair dragging sounds like furniture being murdered. Cabins near elevators mean constant foot traffic and that delightful ding every thirty seconds.
Midship cabins have less motion than forward or aft cabins. If you’re prone to seasickness, this matters. The ship pivots around its center point. Physics doesn’t care about your Instagram shots of the wake.
Balcony cabins on lower decks cost less but come with a view of other passengers’ balconies. Higher deck balconies offer better ocean views and more privacy. Aft balconies are larger but can be windier and smell like exhaust on some ships.
If you want help sorting through deck plans and finding the right cabin for your specific needs, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
