You spent years sailing one cruise line to earn your elite tier. The priority boarding. The free drinks. The little pin. Then you looked at another line and figured you would start over at the bottom.
You might not have to. Several cruise lines will match the status you already earned somewhere else. It is called a status match. You show proof of your tier on one program. They hand you a comparable tier on theirs.
MSC Cruises is the one people talk about. Their program will match status from other cruise lines, and in many cases from hotel loyalty programs too. So your Marriott or Hilton status can turn into a Voyagers Club tier on a ship you have never set foot on. Perks like priority boarding and onboard discounts can apply on your very first sailing with them. That is a strange sentence to write, and it is true.
Royal Caribbean plays a different game. They match status across their own family of brands. If you are Crown and Anchor with Royal Caribbean, that can carry over to Celebrity and Silversea and back again. It does not reach outside their group, so your Carnival tier will not open that particular door. Virgin Voyages has run status match offers of its own, fast tracking travelers from other lines into their Sailing Club.
Here is the part people miss. A status match is a bet the cruise line is making on you. They give you the perks up front hoping you switch lines and stay. That means the offers move. Windows open and close. A program that matches generously this year can tighten next year. Reading the fine print is the whole job here.
You can chase these matches yourself. You can also cut your own hair. Results may vary. The forms are picky, the deadlines are quiet, and the difference between the tier you asked for and the tier you got often comes down to which document you uploaded.
If you sail more than one line, or you are thinking about switching, do not assume you are starting from zero. Your status has value across the fence. If you want help sorting out which match is worth doing and which is a waste of an afternoon, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
