Saguenay Is the Quebec Port Everyone Sails Past

Most people book a Canada and New England cruise for the leaf peeping and the lobster rolls. Then they treat Saguenay as the sleepy stop between the good ports. That is a mistake.

Saguenay sits in Quebec, north of Quebec City, at the end of one of the longest fjords in the world. Your ship does not just arrive here. It sails up the Saguenay Fjord to get to you, past cliffs that rise a thousand feet straight out of the water. It is the only navigable fjord in North America. The approach alone is worth being on deck for.

The town itself is quiet and French Canadian and genuinely charming. The fjord formed during the Ice Age and is the most southerly fjord in the Northern Hemisphere. You can kayak it, hike it, or just look at it. Saguenay Fjord National Park is a short drive from the pier and gives you the big views without much effort.

Here is the first thing most travelers do not know. The Saguenay St. Lawrence Marine Park is home to a resident population of belugas, the only whale species that lives there year round and gives birth there. That population is endangered, with fewer than 900 animals left. The nearby village of Tadoussac is one of the better places on the planet to see them. You do not have to fly to the Arctic for a white whale.

Second thing. This region takes welcoming ships seriously in a way that borders on competitive. When the Queen Mary 2 first docked at the Bagotville wharf in 2016, more than 40,000 people showed up to celebrate. The local welcome has won tourism awards. Expect music and folk dancing and people who are actually happy you came. It is a lot of enthusiasm for a town most cruisers cannot pronounce.

One practical note. The pier is in the La Baie sector, not the main town, and it is about 20 kilometers from Chicoutimi. Uber is thin on the ground here. If you want to reach the national park or Tadoussac for whales, book a tour rather than hoping for a cab. And go in September or October if you can, when the surrounding hills turn gold.

Saguenay is not a place you plan a whole trip around. It is a place that quietly outshines the ports you did plan around. If you want help finding an itinerary that stops here at the right time of year, that is literally what we do.

Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
