Most cruise passengers have never set foot in Greenland. That is starting to change, and Nuuk is the reason.
Nuuk is the capital of Greenland. It is also the northernmost capital on the planet. Small colorful houses climb the slopes of snow capped mountains, and the whole place feels like the edge of the map.
Here is what makes right now the moment. Nuuk opened a brand new international airport on November 28, 2024. The runway was stretched from 950 meters to 2,200 meters, which means larger jets can finally land there directly. For the first time ever, you can fly straight to Greenland’s capital from Copenhagen year round, from Reykjavik year round, and from Newark on a seasonal basis. That is a big deal for anyone building a cruise around this region.
The scenery does the heavy lifting once you arrive. Nuuk sits at the mouth of one of the largest fjord systems in the world. You can take a boat deep into the fjord to abandoned settlements like Qoornoq, a village of colorful summer houses reachable only by water. There is whale watching, there is hiking, and there is a good chance you will see icebergs drifting past without trying.
Here is a lesser known tip. Most water taxis and fjord boats leave from the Tidewater Steps right in town, so you do not need to wander far to find your ride into the wild. And do not skip Myggedalen. It is the old colonial quarter with the traditional Greenlandic houses, and late afternoon light there is the shot everyone comes home with.
A word of honesty. Greenland is not a warm weather beach stop. You are coming for raw Arctic nature and Inuit culture, not a poolside daiquiri. If that sounds like a downgrade to you, this is not your port. If it sounds like the whole point, welcome aboard.
Cruise itineraries that include Nuuk tend to sell out early and they are not everywhere. Timing and routing matter more here than they do for a Caribbean sailing. If you want help sorting out which line and which season actually make sense, that is literally what we do.
Fair winds and following seas,
Captain Steve
