The Balcony Cabin Scam Nobody Talks About

Travel bloggers love pushing balcony cabins. They get prettier photos and bigger affiliate commissions. What they don’t tell you is that most balcony cabins are a waste of money.

Here’s the math nobody wants you to do. You’ll pay $800 to $2,000 more for that balcony. Most people use it maybe 30 minutes total during their entire cruise. That works out to about $50 per minute of actual balcony time.

The balcony furniture is cheap plastic. The “ocean view” is often just other cruise ships or industrial ports. You can’t leave drinks or towels out because of wind. The sliding door lets in noise from neighboring balconies and pool decks above.

Meanwhile you’re missing the real action. The best views are from upper decks that everyone can access for free. Sunrises from deck 14 beat your cramped balcony any day. Pool decks have comfortable loungers instead of plastic chairs.

Interior cabins are bigger because they don’t waste space on that tiny outdoor box. Ocean view cabins give you natural light without the balcony premium. Suites give you actual outdoor space worth using.

Save the balcony money for specialty dining or shore excursions. You know things you’ll actually use and remember. If you want help picking the right cabin category for how you actually cruise, that is literally what we do.
